- Description: Corwen Poor Law Union was formed in 1837; its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians representing its constituent parishes of Bettws Gwerfil Goch, Corwen, Gwyddelwern, Llandrillo, Llangar, and Llansanffraid Glyndyfrdwy, in Merionethshire, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, in Denbighshire and Merionethshire, and Bryneglwys, Cerrigydrudion, Glyntraean, Llangollen, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llangwm, Llansanffraid Glynceiriog and Llantysilio, in Denbighshire.
The Board of Guardians responsible for the Union had other duties, including the registration of births, marriages and deaths, vaccinations, assessments of rates, sanitation, school attendance and infant life protection. By the Local Government Act 1929, Unions were abolished and their duties transferred to County Councils, responsibility for the poor being transferred to the Public Assistance Committee until 1948.

A collection is arranged in order to show context. This means that it will be catalogued to preserve its original order where possible. The collection will be arranged into sub-sections, such as series, files, items, and these will all be clearly related. Archival collections often have folder type structure if they are catalogued to this level of detail. The researcher can then see the context of an individual item, such as a letter - they can see that it forms part of a series, and the series is within a larger collection.
